Figure 5.9 The Area of the Kua
While the Kua does in part relate to the physical area of your body that exists between your pelvis and the tops of your legs it more accurately refers to the energetic gates which exist in this area. The Qi Men or ‘energy gates’ are the points in the energy body through which the major flows of Qi pass. They usually exist within the congenital areas of the energy body rather than the acquired although there are some exceptions to this rule.
The Kua are integral to Nei Gong practice as part of their role is to open and close. At first it is hard to distinguish between your physical joints opening and closing and the energy gates opening and closing. In truth, they are both linked and so to a degree opening one will affect the other.
THE SPINE: SUPPORTING COLUMN OF THE TORSO
Aligning the spine correctly is of prime importance in your Nei Gong training. It can be particularly difficult due to the fact that there are 25 joints in the length of your back and 24 vertebrae as well as the sacrum. The spine takes a great deal of punishment over the course of a person’s life and it is extremely rare to find a person who does not have some sort of vertebral misalignment.
There are numerous theories within the internal arts world as to how the spine should be aligned. These theories range from completely straightening the spine to curling the base of the spine under so that the coccyx points forwards. According to Daoism, alignment of the spine is much simpler. The spine should simply be held in as natural position as possible as shown in Figure 5.10.
